America's most popular suv. introductionfor more than a dozen years, the ford explorer has been the best-selling suv in america. In fact, it's the sixth best-selling vehicle. It's become the standard-issue suburban family hauler. Though capable as a tow vehicle and able to venture off the highway, most explorers spend their lives shuttling people, collecting groceries and performing the duties station wagons performed when baby boomers were growing up. The explorer answers this call admirably and comfortably, and that's a big part of the reason it's so popular.  the explorer is roomy and comfortable. It can seat seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat, which folds flat into the cargo floor when not needed. Part of the reason for this is a superb five-speed automatic transmission. Explorer's wide track and long wheelbase give it a solid, stable stance, while its independent rear suspension (an unusual feature in a mid-to-large-size suv) gives it a smoother ride and better handling than suvs with traditional live rear axles.  safety features abound. Advancetrac with roll stability control is now standard on all explorers. This sophisticated system not only senses and corrects potential skids and slides, but also monitors for potential rollovers. We recommend the optional safety canopy airbags, which are designed to provide some protection in the event of a rollover. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are also standard, and a tire pressure monitor comes on all but the base model.  the explorer is rated to pull trailers up to 7,140 pounds when properly equipped, and though it does not excel at off-road travel, it can go most of the places most of us need to go. lineupthe 2005 ford explorer is available in six trim levels: xls, xls sport, xlt, xlt sport, eddie bauer, and limited.    an overhead-cam v6 engine is standard on all models. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend this option. walkaroundwith its wheels pushed out toward the corners, the ford explorer looks stable and comfortable. Though ubiquitous, it is a handsome, good-looking vehicle. Front and rear fascia are smoothly integrated, while jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Various combinations of bright, blacked-out, color-contrasting or color-coodinated trim distinguish the xls from the xlt from the bauer from the limited. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but it continues to be a popular feature among loyal ford owners. interiorthe explorer is a comfortable vehicle, even on long trips. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model.  adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for a wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keeps odds and ends in check. The interior door handles seemed a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate the one-liter size. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank. The optional six-disc in-dash cd player sounds good and is easy to operate, with large, clearly marked controls.  the second row of seats is quite comfortable. Many people prefer the second-row bucket seats available on eddie bauer and limited, which are more comfortable but only accommodate two passengers.  seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. The second-row center seat has an integrated shoulder belt, a feature not found on all suvs. All occupants should always wear their seat belts as they are the first line of defense in an accident.  third-row seating is available. In fact, the decision to add third-row seating drove the design and engineering of the current explorer. A terrific compact suv. introductionthe ford escape looks like a little truck among small suvs. Its styling reminds us of ford's larger, truck-based sport utility vehicles. The escape's ride height and seating position are a bit higher than competitors such as the honda cr-v, and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is substantially more than most other vehicles in the class.  yet the ford escape still delivers the advantages of unit-body, car-based competitors such as the honda cr-v. All variants, including the v6 and escape hybrid, deliver some of the best epa mileage ratings in the class. All models are offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.  for the most part, the hybrid drives just like a conventional gas-only escape. It's a well-executed package. Folding the rear seats opens a good sized cargo area with a flat floor, and space behind the seat surpasses that in the trunk of a typical sedan. There are lots of interior storage spaces, the finish is upscale and pleasing, and feature function and switches are among the best.  escape was redesigned for 2008. For 2010, changes are minor. An integrated blind spot mirror, mykey programmable vehicle key, rear view camera system, and active park assist are now available, and the escape also features hands-free sync with traffic, directions & information. All the features improve safety and reduce driver distractions.  the ford escape remains one of the more appealing vehicles in its class, regardless of price, and certainly one of the better values. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic 1,210) is optional. The hybrid limited versions are equipped similarly to the limited models, but add the hybrid powertrain. Unlike some mild hybrid suvs, the escape hybrid can run on 100 percent electric power up to about 25 mph.  safety features include front- and side-impact airbags for front occupants and curtain-type head protection airbags for all outboard seats. The side curtains can remain inflated for several seconds in the event of a rollover, and are designed to slide between the side glass and occupants if the people are oddly seated or resting heads against a window. For starters, the escape sits a bit higher than many competitors, and the high profile is enhanced by its design.  the grille looks like it was designed for a truck. The headlights are essentially connected to the grille, and shaped to create a family resemblance with ford's edge crossover suv. Yet the grille itself is tall and flat and stacked right on top of a skid plate-type fascia that flows under the bumper. The escape's beltline, or the crease that runs just under the windows, is high, too, and its roof pillars are blacked out. The taillights have a clear band that wraps around the rear corners. The lower bumpers and rocker panels are now painted to match the body on all models, rather than molded in a matte finish. In total, the effect is cleaner and more polished than previous models, and it's all quite handsome.  the side mirrors are large, but their shape generates little noise as air speeds over them. The roof, too, is designed to reduce interior noise. Recessed channels running its length are intended to move air more quietly over the surface. Horizontal ribs underneath the panel add structure, which limits flex in the metal and reduces booming noise inside at high speeds.  we're fond of a couple of features in back of the escape. A new step pad on the bumper provides secure footing for anyone who steps up to put something on the roof rack, and the two-piece tailgate is handy. The rear glass can be popped open with the key fob, so dropping small items like a gym bag into the cargo area is much easier than it might be with some competitors, which require hefting the entire gate upward. interiorthis is one of ford's best interiors in terms of the look and feel of materials used. It looked like the lacquered finish on a fine piano. The satiny black or silver used in lower trim levels isn't bad, either. Yet the highlight is a woven-look, rubberized trim on the dash and console. It looks sporty and suited to a more expensive car.  the escape features upholstery cloth made from 100-percent recycled material. Overall, though, the seats are smaller than those in a larger sport utility. Drivers with big frames might find them small. There's not an abundance of side bolstering, but that makes it easier to slide into the seats, and there's enough to keep occupants solidly in place during the type of driving a typical escape owner is likely to undertake.  the gauges are clustered in a shaded binnacle that can be absorbed in a glance: tachometer left, speedometer right, with fuel and coolant temperature in the middle, along with an easy-to-read trip- and systems-info display. We absolutely loved this, because it includes a menu that allows the driver to easily cycle through and change features such as headlight-off delay and auto-locking.  the gauges and switches feature ford's new signature backlighting style, which the company calls ice blue. No gripe here, as the bluish white is crisper and brighter than conventional green-yellow or orange lighting. The problem is the script on the gauges, and particularly the speedometer. The big vents at the ends move lots of air, and there are two more in the middle near the top of the center stack. These can be aimed to avoid blasting the driver’s hands or face with a rush of air. At the very top sits a neat display that shows compass heading, date and time, exterior temperature and, on models so equipped, the two interior temp settings.  when it comes to placement and function of switches, the escape is first rate, and examples are easy to find. All-new, reinvented, and better in every respect. introductionthe 2011 ford explorer is not only the beginning of a new generation, but of a new life. Ford calls it 100 percent reinvented, and it's the truth, and it's all good.  this reinvention of the venerable ford explorer is 4 inches longer, 5 inches wider, and makes the third row standard. Yet it's 100 pounds lighter. Its engine has 80 more horsepower and gets 25 percent better fuel mileage. Its price is $1100 lower than the previous model.  the 2011 explorer pretty much blows its competition out of the water, with first-in-class epa fuel mileage of 17 city/25 highway miles per gallon, first-in-class horsepower (tied with jeep grand cherokee), first in cargo capacity and second-row legroom. Ford claims 10 segment exclusives, including some in safety, with optional inflatable rear seatbelts 195) and standard curve control, which applies braking to individual wheels as needed to correct corner trajectory.  there are three explorer models, base, xlt and limited. Each seats 7 passengers, and uses the new 3. 5-liter v6 engine, 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, with a new 6-speed automatic transmission. It has 237 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque, gets one more mile per gallon, and likely won't cost any less.  the optional 4wd terrain management system uses no transfer case. The driver selects the terrain with a knob (normal, sand, mud/ruts, or snow/gravel), and the car does the rest, flawlessly. It has beefy but smooth proportions, with short overhangs and fluid lines that are 12 percent more aerodynamic than before.  the chassis is super rigid, using twice as much high-strength steel as the old. There's also some boron steel whose strength is not only high, it's also thin and it bends more easily, to form the explorer's front bumper beam, allowing the fenders to wrap gracefully and fade away at the corners. Such curves also help to transmit crash energy down and outside, away from the cabin.  there's a segment-leading 80. 7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front seats, with the split rear rows folded, which they do at the touch of a button on each side, bouncing back up with the pull of a lever. There's outstanding second-row legroom of 39. 8 inches, with good third-row space at 33. 2 inches.  ford's stated goal was to make the explorer's interior look expensive, like the cabin of a bmw x5 or audi q7. They've succeeded, at least on the explorer limited, whose leather seats are perfect, both in bolstering and stiffness/softness.  the front seat elevates high. The explorer will be a versatile family vehicle, so the seats have memory for the xlt and limited, while the steering wheel and pedals adjust for different drivers in the family. Mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with optional manual shifting, we found the power and acceleration to be smooth and responsive, with plenty of torque to maintain 80 mph on an uphill freeway, after a smooth and welcome kickdown to 5th gear.  ford put all the engineering effort it could muster into the new explorer, and got the ride, handling, and nvh results they hoped for. The rigid chassis and careful tuning of the independent suspension produce a superb all-around ride. We found the new explorer takes corners and undulations flat (without excessive leaning), and the speed-sensitive electric power steering enables it to turn relatively tight and quick.  we tested the explorer off-road as well as on the highway. The terrain management system uses no transfer case. Even with all-season tires (as opposed to all-terrain tires which improve traction in snow, sand and mud), the explorer blasted around a sand pit and traversed deep ditches and steep hills, no problem. It was the smoothest ride we've ever encountered over such terrain.  two-thirds of all 6 million explorers sold over the last 20 years are still on the road, says ford. The explorer vehicle engineering team took prototypes of the new model over towering colorado passes, buried them in deep sand in the california desert, carved through snow in minnesota and northern michigan, traversed mud bogs in alabama, and logged countless development miles at arizona and michigan proving grounds.  all three 2011 explorer models seat seven passengers. Initially, all use the new 3. 5-liter v6 engine with new 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2. 4-liter turbocharged and ballyhooed ecoboost motor will be available later in the year. Also standard are first-row airbags, side seat airbags, and side curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; tire pressure monitoring system, and front ratcheting headrests. It truly looks 100 percent reinvented, ford's motto for the car. And it is a car; we can stop saying truck for almost every suv now, and maybe even stop saying crossover, because they've just about all crossed over. Such curves also help to transmit crash energy down and outside, away from the cabin.  the explorer is 4 inches longer and 5 inches wider than before, and its width is evident in its confident stance, but its smooth styling cheats the eye. It has beefy but smooth proportions, with short overhangs and fluid lines that are 12 percent more aerodynamic than before. Details such as the liftgate spoiler lip and flexible lower front air dam (black) were tweaked in the wind tunnel. We still like body-colored better.  the hood looks short from the side but long when looking straight down it; it's got two parallel humps and a scoop in the center, smoother than it sounds.  the window outline is clean, bold and symmetrical, with blackened a-, b-, and d-pillars, and with body-colored c-pillars that slant down and back and impart forward motion to the vehicle. With the dark privacy glass, from the shoulders up, in white at least, the explorer looks like a sleek and powerful yacht. The fender flares are inspired by the mustang, body sides follow the lines of the taurus, and new three-bar grille strikes clearly of range rover (formerly in the family).
